United Way event at the Mount discusses causes of, counters to opioid abuse

School officials, nonprofits, and other community members worked together at “Resilient Communities, Challenging the Opioid Epidemic” at Mount Saint Mary College on Thursday, October 17. 

The United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region presented “Resilient Communities, Challenging the Opioid Epidemic” at Mount Saint Mary College on Thursday, October 17.

About 100 attendees worked together to identify – and find solutions for – problems that arise from opioid abuse in the Hudson Valley.

Carlton Hall, a former Vice President for Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), discussed the role of opioid prevention, treatment recovery, and how it affects youths.

Jo Ann Brown (NAMI Mid-Hudson), Regina T. Cieslak (Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan and Ulster), Dr. Irina Gelman (Commissioner of Health for Orange County), and Jean-Marie Niebuhr, LCSW-R (Dutchess County Department of Behavioral and Community Health) revealed assets and opportunities schools and nonprofits can use to overcome the epidemic.
