Service at sunrise: Mount students volunteer at St. Mary’s Church pantry

Mount Saint Mary College students help sort hundreds of pounds of food on September 20, to be distributed to those in need through Newburgh’s St. Mary’s Church

While their peers were waking up and getting ready for early morning classes on Friday, September 20, several Mount Saint Mary College students were already awake and volunteering at St. Mary’s Church in Newburgh, N.Y.

In a joint venture of the Mount’s School of Nursing and the college’s chapter of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), students sorted boxes of donated food and packed the items for distribution.

St. Mary’s outreach distributes fresh meat, fruits and vegetables, packaged and canned goods, and more, which are donated to them by Hudson Valley Food Pantry. The church also distributes clothing to residents in need in the greater Newburgh area. This outreach project services hundreds of residents each month.

The students in attendance were Mount Nursing students Jennifer Turci of Plantsville, Conn., vice president of the Mount’s Catholic Relief Services; Deidre Lydon of Bellerose, N.Y.; Angelica Rolka of Poland, N.Y.; and Kim Collis of Monroe, N.Y.
