Mount Saint Mary College’s Together in Pink team (seen here) earned more than $2,000 for cancer research at last year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. The team is looking to beat their 2023 total at the next walk, scheduled for Sunday, October 20.

Mount Saint Mary College’s School of Nursing is striking back again breast cancer – and you can help.

Through the college’s Nursing Workforce Diversity (NWD) Program, students, employees, and friends of the college will be participating in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) Walk on Sunday, October 20. The event begins at 9 a.m. at the Woodbury Commons Premium Outlets in Woodbury, N.Y.

The public is invited to aid the NWD team in two ways. The first is helping them to meet their fundraising goal of more than $2,000. The donations will fund future breast cancer research, patient support, and advocacy. The other way to help is to join the team at the event itself. Donations or signing up for the walk can be accomplished at the team’s website, www.msmc.edu/pink

Last year, more than 40 students, faculty, staff, and friends of the college helped the Mount’s NWD team earn nearly $2,300 for the cause. This year, the team’s goal is to surpass the 2023 totals in both donations and on-site participation.

Over the past three decades, the American Cancer Society’s MSABC campaign has become the nation’s largest breast cancer movement. These 3- to 5-mile noncompetitive walks provide a supportive community for breast cancer survivors, people living with metastatic breast cancer, caregivers, and families.

The college’s participation is made possible through its Nursing Workforce Diversity grant. The Mount’s School of Nursing was recently awarded a $1.6 million, three-year NWD grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The NWD program focuses on the recruitment, support, retention, and graduation of nursing students from underrepresented groups. It increases nursing education opportunities and assists students from disadvantaged backgrounds to become baccalaureate-prepared nurses.

The Fall 2024 semester marks the start of the program’s third year. The nursing students in this program benefit from a multitude of support services and opportunities to serve the community.

The Mount’s service-focused approach to education goes hand-in-hand with helping professions like Nursing. Mount Nursing students enjoy state-of-the-art simulation labs and clinical relationships with dozens of area hospitals. The Mount’s passionate faculty are dedicated to the success of both their undergraduate and graduate students.
