Students explored a variety of careers in law enforcement at a panel discussion held by Mount Saint Mary College’s Career Center on Thursday, October 10.
Panelists included Lt. Christina Schluter of the City of Newburgh Police Department; Mount alumnus Lt. Dan Smith ’98 of the New York State Police; Darlene DeJesus of the Orange County District Attorney’s Office; Tim Davidian of the Orange County Department of Probation; Mike Barrera of AIC Companies, LLC, a private investigative firm; and Officer Chris Barreto of the NY Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
After the panelists introduced themselves and briefly described their careers’ work and requirements, questions were opened to the audience.
Nicholas Murphy of Wingdale, N.Y. was interested in where AIC Companies’ investigators are allowed to practice. Barrera answered that AIC Companies is licensed in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware and added that AIC Companies is allowed to continue across state lines as long as the investigation starts in which they are licensed to operate.
Another student asked about the differences between the New York State Police’s hiring requirements and those of the New Jersey State Police. Lt. Smith answered that, to his knowledge, the requirements are fairly similar.
The panelists concluded the talk with a shared message, imploring students to try their hardest each day, so they can rest knowing that they have done their best.
