The winners of Mount Saint Mary College’s Creative Writing Contest where honored on Thursday, May 2, during an open mic event in the Kaplan Family Library and Learning Center.
The contest was spearheaded by the college’s Writing Center and the Kaplan Family Library. The author of the winning entry received a $100 gift card, with the runners-up both receiving a $50 gift card.

Caitlyn Garrigan of Staten Island, N.Y., a Junior English major, with her creative nonfiction/narrative journalism piece, “One Man’s Numbered Days.”
Runners-up
Amanda Asare of Brentwood, N.Y., a Junior Healthcare Management major, with her poem, “Gold of Growth.”
Morgan Merritt of Middletown, N.Y., a Freshman, with her poem, “Like I Am.”
In addition to the Writing Contest, the Mount’s Writing Center sponsors a variety of events for students throughout the year. The center’s tutors assist Mount students in all stages of the writing process, including brainstorming and organizing ideas; structuring sentences, paragraphs, and essays; strengthening argumentation; incorporating research; appropriate systems of citation; and improving grammar and style.
