Mount Saint Mary College’s Desmond Center for Community Engagement and Wellness will host the “Self-Expression as Self-Care” writing workshop on Tuesday, April 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The free, public workshop, part of the 2025 Orange County Office for the Aging Spring Wellness Series, will take place at the Desmond Center on the Mount’s campus at 330 Powell Ave., Newburgh, N.Y.

No prior experience in creative writing is necessary, and writers of all levels are welcome. Notebooks, pens, and lunch will be provided. To register, call 845-615-3733.

The workshop, an intergenerational instructional session with Mount staff and students, will delve into creative writing, drafting, and working independently on personal expression. Gina R. Evers, director of the Mount’s Writing Center, will guide participants in writing activities designed to honor and affirm their lived experiences.

“Two important components of self-care are self-expression and human connection,” says Evers. “Writing is a practice that cultivates both.”

Evers holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. Her poems have been published in PANK, About Place Journal, Quarterly West, and The Comstock Review, among other journals and anthologies. Her writing has been supported by the VCFA Postgraduate Writers’ Conference, the Martha’s Vineyard Institute for Creative Writing, and the Lambda Literary Foundation.

The Orange County Office for the Aging will provide dedicated community resources and information for caregivers and older adults at the workshop. The resources will provide valuable info, advice, and support for the local community, including upcoming events and contact information.

The Desmond Center provides wellness and educational services for underserved individuals and families. The center offers accessible and equitable educational, health, and wellness services for community members and families in the local area. All services are free of cost and open to the community.
