Mount Saint Mary College Nursing students added another tool to their life-saving repertoire on Wednesday, November 13 at a training session for administering naloxone, an anti-opioid overdose medicine.
The event was an initiative of the Mount’s Nursing Student Union.
The program, called “Keep It Moving,” culminated with students receiving free samples of Narcan brand naloxone, which comes in the form of a nasal spray. The spray temporarily reverses the effects of opioids, buying caregivers more time to seek medical attention in the event of an overdose.
This is the second such training at the college, the first having occurred in April of this year. To date, more than 200 students and faculty have been certified in the use of the medicine.
“The opioid crisis is something that is very important to me and I’m so glad that we had such a success through this training,” said Vanesa Mazza, Senior Class Representative with the college’s Nursing Student Union. “Not only are these students able to save a life and educate others in our community, but they can also do the same back home.”
