Ashley Collazo, acting director of the Desmond Center at Mount Saint Mary College, was a driving force behind planning the upcoming Health Equity Series event.

The Desmond Center for Community Engagement and Wellness, a Mount Saint Mary College initiative, will be hosting the presentation “De-stigmatizing Immigrant Populations via Trauma-Informed Care and Cultural Humility” on Friday, February 9, 2024 from 9 to 11 a.m.

The event, part of the Desmond Center’s ongoing Health Equity Talks series, will take place on the Mount campus at 330 Powell Ave., Newburgh. It’s free and open to the public, but space is limited and registration is required. To register, visit bit.ly/dccewfebruary2024 and sign up before Wednesday, February 7.

Jerel Ezell, director of the Center for Cultural Humility at University of California, Berkeley, will discuss the challenges faced by immigrant-serving organizations and the important role of trauma-informed practice (TIP) and cultural humility in effectively supporting the immigrant community. Participants will learn evidence-based strategies to engage immigrants through these approaches and create a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.

Ezell is a social epidemiologist and assistant professor in Community Health Sciences, and a Fulbright Scholar. His fieldwork and teaching focus on health disparities and social inequities, with an emphasis on environmental determinants of health, opioid use disorder, psychological trauma, and violence.

The event is a joint venture between the Mount’s Desmond Center, the Orange County Human Rights Commission, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orange County, and the University of California, Berkeley.

The Desmond Center provides wellness and educational services for underserved individuals and families. The center offers accessible and equitable educational, health, and wellness services for community members and families in the local area.
