Bishop Dunn Memorial School (BDMS) hosted its annual Cupcake 5K Run/Walk on the Mount Saint Mary College campus on Sunday, September 17, raising $19,500 for scholarships and improvements to the school.
Students, parents, faculty, and members of the community came together to make the 2023 Cupcake 5K the largest in BDMS history, with nearly 250 race participants. There were 40 volunteers helping to run the event, including BDMS parents, Mount faculty and staff, and students from the Mount’s swim team, lacrosse team, and Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education.
There were races for both adults and children, as well as plenty of cupcakes to go around.
Before the events got started, Sr. Lucy Povilonis, OP, Religious Coordinator at Bishop Dunn and Mount alumna, gave a Dominican blessing. Fr. Gregoire J. Fluet, Interim President of the Mount, campus chaplain, and director of Campus Ministry, also kicked things off with a prayer.
“Once again, we were blessed with perfect 5K weather,” said Nancy Benfer, Bishop Dunn Memorial School principal and second grade teacher. “All participants enjoyed a fantastic day surrounded by BDMS, Mount, and Newburgh Community friends.”
Bishop Dunn, on the Mount campus, was founded in 1883. The school is committed to the academic, spiritual, emotional, social, and physical development of children, pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Mount Education students do fieldwork at the school, under the guidance of seasoned Bishop Dunn faculty.
