A Commuter Student studying in the Commuter Lounge on the first day of classes.

Being a commuter at college can be a little scary at first. You may be worried that you’ll feel isolated from what’s going on on-campus, or that you won’t be able to make friends. As I began navigating college as a commuter student, I found that being involved on campus allows you to find a place where you feel comfortable and have activities outside of your academics.

For me, that organization was the Athletics Department. By playing a sport, I was able to meet new people while getting involved with something that I really enjoy.

The Student Government Association (SGA) also makes sure that commuters can get involved in events all throughout the year. With events at varying times throughout the day, and a variety of clubs to join, you’re sure to find a group of people to bond with. Don’t see a club that interests you? There’s always the opportunity to start your own club!

As an added bonus, the Mount has its own Commuters Association, which has a representative who will be a voice for Commuters when planning events, event making ones specifically for commuters.

Even inside the classroom, don't be scared to talk to people in your class! It is so helpful to always have at least one person in everyone you have so you are able to talk about classwork and due dates. The more you talk, the easier it gets for you to talk to people.

Most importantly, don’t stress! The Mount community is a family, and that means you will see more and more familiar faces as time goes on and remember there are always ways to get involved around campus!
