Anyone who is a part of the Mount community knows what it’s like to experience and share the many amazing and quirky things that are a part of this school. As a senior, here are my top 12 things that only Mount students would understand:
1. The true and honest struggle of walking up the stairs to the library/DC.
The DC (Dominican Center) is without a doubt, one of the most beautiful spots on campus. Between the breathtaking view and the chapel, it’s gorgeous. However, that walk up those stairs are also breathtaking, just in a different way. They can make even the best athletes on our campus feel completely out of shape.
2. The freedom of moving from Sakac or Guzman to the Courts.
Students who live on campus know that the first-year halls are great, even if there is a curfew and a security desk where you have to swipe in all the time. However, I think most students would agree that one of the best rewards of surviving freshman year is getting that little bit of extra freedom that comes with living in the Courts.
3. The great debate of driving to a place on campus.
The Mount is a small campus, which means you can walk to any part of campus and it probably wouldn’t take you more than about 15 minutes. But if you have a car or you are a commuter going from one building to another for class, there is usually the debate of whether to drive and lose a coveted parking spot or brave the walk.
4. That feeling when you go to the View at 2 AM after a long night of studying or for a late night snack and there are no fries left.
Having the View open 24 hours a day is definitely awesome. However, there are those nights where you walk in after a long night of studying or just hanging out and there is not a fry or tater tot in sight.
5. The 3rd floor of Aquinas.
Having a class on the third floor of Aquinas is a right of passage that just about every Mount student experiences at least once during their time here. Yes, the walk up the stairs can be rough. But, in reality, it’s not that bad. And hey, it’s a free workout!
6. The view of the Hudson River.
Whether you are seeing it from a room in Sakac or outside of the DC, almost anywhere on campus gives you some sort of view of the breathtaking Hudson River.
7. When someone takes your unassigned seat in class.
Now this is probably the one thing on this list that all college students can relate to, but I personally think it makes it just slightly more awkward and oddly more of a habit when you are in a small class and someone steals your seat.
8. Henry’s.
Henry’s is a true staple at the Mount. From Mac Bites to mozzarella sticks to wing Wednesdays, it is definitely my favorite place to eat on campus. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even a snack, any time of day is perfect for a trip to Henry’s.
9. Nursing Majors.
I might be exaggerating when I say that a day doesn’t go by where I don’t see someone walking across campus in nursing scrubs, but I really don’t think I am.
10. Off campus food.
From Alexis Diner to Billy Joe’s to Downtown Bagel to Dunkin, there are a number of places that every Mount student is guaranteed to visit at least once during their years here. In fact, it seems nearly impossible to not run into a fellow Mount person when out at one of these places.
11. The Shuttle.
The MSMC shuttle is another staple here at the Mount. From trips to Target or a ride to the Beacon train station, it really was a lifesaver my freshman year.
12. Friendships.
Being a Mount student means that there are endless things that we all relate to each and every day, but the biggest and best one is the friends that we make here. No matter if you’re a resident, a transfer, or a commuter, you will leave here with some of the best friends you could have ever hoped for.
