Jacqueline
Murekatete (right), a survivor of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, is the
keynote speaker during Holocaust Remembrance Day at Mount Saint
Mary College, Sunday April 22 at 2 pm.
The free public event will be held in Hudson Hall Auditorium on
campus, 330 Powell Avenue, Newburgh, NY.
“The Last Survivor,” an award winning 45 minute documentary
about survivors of four mass atrocities – the Holocaust, Rwanda,
Darfur, and Congo -- will also be shown.
Murekatete, the sole survivor of her immediate and extended
family, was nine years old at the time of the massacres in Rwanda.
She is now a program director with Miracle Corners of the World, a
non-profit organization founded in 1999 with the vision: "Local
Change through Global Exchange." MCW’s mission is to empower youth
to become positive agents of change in their communities.
The program is sponsored by the Newburgh Jewish Community
Center, Temple Beth Jacob, Jewish Federation of Greater Orange
County and Mount Saint Mary College’s philosophy and religious
studies department.
