“Machinal,” inspired by the conviction and execution of Queens,
NY housewife Ruth Brown Snyder for killing her husband, will be
staged at Mount Saint Mary College, November 10–12 at 7:30 pm in
Aquinas Theatre, 330 Powell Avenue. The public is invited.
The play’s 1928 Broadway première, directed by Arthur Hopkins,
is considered one of the high points of Expressionist theater in
America.
Written by American journalist Sophie Treadwell,
“Machinal”—French for mechanical or automatic — is a collaborative
effort featuring Mount Saint Mary College students, alumni,
faculty, and students from SUNY Orange County.
The cast, directed by James Phillips, assistant professor of
