Nursing students train in the college's state-of-the-art nursing
lab using one of the facility's computer-controlled simulated
patients.
Mount Saint Mary College will receive a $100,000 federal
grant for nursing laboratory equipment, thanks to the assistance of
U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer.
"With New York in the midst of a nursing shortage, this project
will provide Mount Saint Mary College with the equipment,
facilities and training to produce more first-rate nurses," said
Schumer. "Access to these resources will produce better quality
nurses and will result in better patient care for the entire Hudson
Valley region."
The Mount's reputation for the quality of its nursing, teacher
education, and science programs has resulted in increased
enrollments. "This presents a unique opportunity for the college to
respond to pressing local, regional and national needs for highly
skilled professional nurses," Schumer said.
"We are grateful to Sen. Schumer for his efforts in securing
this grant for our quality nursing education program," said Fr.
Kevin E. Mackin, OFM, president of the college.
With the only four-year nursing degree program in the mid-Hudson
region, Mount Saint Mary College has created a nursing wing in
Aquinas Hall, expanding and upgrading nursing skills, physical
assessment and simulation laboratories.
The college also dedicated the adjacent Kaplan Family
Mathematics, Science and Technology Center, providing new science
laboratories that are critical to nursing education.
"We are pleased to receive this federal grant and we appreciate
Sen. Schumer's efforts on our behalf," said Debra Hrelic, chair of
The Mount's Division of Nursing. "The grant will help us to
continue to provide quality nursing education to more nurses and
positively respond to the nursing shortage."
The Mount offers undergraduate and graduate nursing programs
that are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing
Education.
