Newburgh, NY -
The number of special education teachers is expected to increase
by 17 percent from 2008 to 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics.
Thanks to a $5,000 grant from the TD Charitable Foundation, the
charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®,
Mount Saint Mary College will better meet this need by further
developing its special education programs, part of the college’s
nationally accredited teacher education curriculum.
The TD Charitable Foundation grant provides for assistive
technology equipment for use with current and future special
education students in public schools, particularly in the Newburgh
and Beacon city school districts. Studies show that assistive
technology in the classroom benefits students by enhancing learning
and building life skills.
Mount Saint Mary College students partner with more than 50 area
school districts in the mid Hudson Valley, working with students
with and without disabilities, utilizing the most effective
teaching methods. Before they even start student teaching, Mount
students complete approximately 100 to 150 hours or more of
in-school fieldwork.
Approximately two thirds of Mount undergraduate education
students – and one third of graduate education students -- obtained
their special education certification in 2010.
Special education programs were introduced at Mount Saint Mary
College in 1964. The Mount now offers undergraduate and graduate
programs in special education, dual childhood and special
education, dual adolescence and special education, and dual
literacy and special education to help prepare students to meet the
needs of all learners.
With federal recognition for community service, Mount Saint Mary
College also offers strong career preparation in health
professions, business, psychology, social services and liberal
arts.
The Mount anticipates its largest resident population and some
460 new freshman when the class moves in August 27. The first
Admissions Open House, for future prospects, is scheduled for
September 18.
