The Honors Program

Why accept the challenge to be an Honors student?

Honors students at the Mount have unlimited opportunities to pursue interests and develop new perspectives, in and out of the classroom. Freshmen honors students bond with their peers, who have similar motivation, priorities, and interests.

The interdisciplinary nature of the Honors Program blends the arts, sciences, culture, history, and technology to offer an intellectually stimulating education.

The Honors Program. What’s in it for you?

  • Priority Registration: You’ll be eligible for early course registration. You'll be able to register for the courses you need without worrying about the class being closed.
  • Collaborative field experiences: You’ll visit museums, art galleries, historical landmarks, environmental sites, and see independent films. Enjoy day trips to New York City, New England, and around the Hudson Valley.
  • Honors Housing: You’ll enjoy the advantage of honors housing in a select wing of Sakac Hall, with students who are similarly motivated and committed to high academic performance.
  • Twelve Honor Societies representing all different majors, with national or international affiliations, are available to you.
  • Honors Courses: You’ll be placed in one or two designated honors course sections with your peers in freshman year. In sophomore year, you’ll take the honors seminar course Ways of Seeing the Hudson River.
  • Study Abroad during your junior or senior year. The Mount offers study abroad programs in Ireland, England, Spain, and Italy, as well as summer study trips.
  • Complete a faculty-led independent research project during your junior or senior year.

Education, enriched

As an honors student, you’ll gain an added depth to your education. The honors program provides interdisciplinary dimensions to your studies, incorporating elements of history, science, art, literature, and technology. You'll learn to see the world, and your environment, with an enhanced understanding.

You'll visit museums, art galleries, historical landmarks, environmental sites, and see independent films with your peers. You'll kayak through Constitution Marsh and test Hudson River water samples. You'll visit Revolutionary War sites, and enjoy frequent day trips to New York City, New England, and around the Hudson Valley.

Seniors participate in a celebratory trip to New York City to see a Broadway play/musical, and are acknowledged at an Honors Recognition Event prior to graduation. Successful completion of the program is indicated on students' official academic transcript, which will follow you through your academic and professional life.

When you complete the 4-year Honors Program, you will

  • Graduate with honors;
  • Be recognized in the honors award ceremony;
  • Earn an honors citation on your official college transcript.
