individuals with low to moderate incomes (generally $49,000 or
less) who need help with their tax forms can request free income
tax preparation assistance through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance (VITA) program.
Mount Saint Mary College accounting students have teamed up with
PathStone Community Improvement of Newburgh to provide the service.
The college volunteers Stephen Blomquist, Hopewell Junction, NY;
Joe Canary and Durija Hadzibrahimi, Newburgh, NY; Marco
Crescimanni, Selden, NY; Brianne Geller, East Rockaway, NY; Leonora
Liz, New York, NY; Noelle Shalian, Salisbury Mills, NY.
The volunteers also completed online training plus a full day of
on-site training with an IRS representative. All returns will be
reviewed before they are finalized.
The accounting program at the Mount offers a sequence of
specialized instruction in accounting theory, cost management,
budgeting, auditing, taxation, accounting systems, and accounting
as a management tool.
More than 50 percent of the Mount’s 2,700 students volunteer in
the field as part of coursework, or through clubs.
The IRS VITA site in Newburgh is located at Center for Hope, 280
Broadway. To schedule an appointment, call 845-569-0770. Mount
students are also providing help with state and federal income tax
forms at the Newburgh Free Library, 124 Grand Street, and Senior
Horizons, 353 S. Plank Road.
