Jillian Torre of Bohemia, NY, a journalism/public relations
double major at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY,
experienced the thrill of competition while learning valuable
skills as she vied for and was selected Career Center Apprentice.
Torre (left) was awarded a grand prize iPad, donated by Laerdal
Medical Corporation in Wappingers Falls, NY. Second and third prize
winners received monetary prizes: Catherine Conde (center) of
Bloomingburg, NY, business management and administration/marketing
and public relations double major; and Christina Cruz of North
Plainfield, NJ, mathematics.
They may not hear Donald Trump declare, “You’re fired,” but the
six students vying to be Career Center Apprentice at Mount Saint
Mary College have experienced the thrill of competition while
learning valuable skills.
They have earned points this semester for participating in
Career Center sponsored events and opportunities: learning to craft
a resume and cover letter, developing solid interviewing
strategies, and improving a professional image. Eighty five
students participated in the contest.
The students earning the most points – the final six --
submitted resumes and cover letters to the Career Center and were
interviewed by a panel of three local employers: Tom Weddell of
Vanacore, DeBenedictus, DiGovanni & Weddell, Newburgh, NY;
Carol Weber of the Anderson Center for Autism, Staatsburg, NY; and
Stacy Clarke of Laerdal Medical Corporation in Wappingers Falls,
NY.
In the finale: Catherine Conde of Bloomingburg, NY, business
management and administration/marketing; Christina Cruz of
Plainfield, NJ, mathematics; Lori Beth Cusumano of Valley Stream,
NY, psychology; Nimmy James of New Hyde Park, NY, nursing; Angela
Oliveri of Jackson Heights, NY, public relations; and Jillian Torre
of Bohemia, NY, journalism/public relations.
The winner was announced November 29 at 4 pm in Aquinas Atrium
on campus.
The grand prize was an iPad, donated by Laerdal. Monetary prizes
were awarded for second and third place winners.
The road to a career begins at Mount Saint Mary College in
