Newburgh, NY -
Instead of basking on the beach during spring break, more than a
dozen students from Mount Saint Mary College’s Habitat for Humanity
club will travel to Huntsville, AL to build a home for a family in
need
Student volunteers include: Amanda Vagnone, Valley Stream, NY,
Alexandra Brady, East Northport, NY, and Karen Borst, Levittown,
NY, (honors program), mathematics/education; Kristen Fede,
Plainview, NY, psychology; Jenna Noll, Rockville Centre, NY, and
Jamie Reed, Catskill, NY, business; Alexander Mayer, Wappingers
Falls, NY, accounting; Rebecca Basile, Lynbrook, NY, Erin Burpoe,
Hewlett, NY, and Jessica Burns, Schenectady, NY, nursing; Lindsey
Massaro, West Islip, NY, information technology/education; Amanda
Pfister, Staten Island, NY, biology; and Stephanie Moore, White
Plains, NY, undeclared.
More than 50 percent of the men and women pursuing degrees at
the Mount volunteer through service clubs or in the field as a
requirement of coursework. Students, preparing for careers in
education, health professions, business, psychology, human services
and liberal arts, also provide assistance to Big Brothers Big
Sisters, and at schools, hospitals and clinics in the community.
For these and other efforts, Mount Saint Mary College was named to
the federal President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor
Roll.
The Mount’s residence life staff hopes to participate in a
Newburgh Habitat project in August. The Habitat club created a team
for the Newburgh Habitat Walk for Housing on April 22 and for the
Mount’s Relay for Life, later this month.
