Newburgh, NY -

Victor Azuaje, assistant professor of Hispanic studies at Mount
Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY, explained that after Vatican
II, when mass could be spoken in native languages, songs that were
political and spoke out against abuse and oppression became popular
in Latin American countries. Azuaje played guitar and sang “Las
Casas de Carton,” about people living in cardboard box houses, and
“Credo Nicareguense,” about Jesus Christ as architect, engineer,
carpenter, and boss: all a very familiar way of saying “you” in
Spanish, noted Azuaje. Showcasing creativity, the Curtin Memorial
Library at Mount Saint Mary College presented various events to
celebrate Library Week 2012, including a bagpipe concert by Brett
Bondar, information technology analyst, and gospel songs by
Evangela Oates, instruction and reference services librarian.
