Concentration in Journalism
Overview
The communication arts-media studies major prepares students for
careers in the multimedia communications fields. Media students can
choose from two concentrations: media studies/production or media
studies/journalism.
- Media studies/production includes digital
production skills with an emphasis on video and audio production,
writing for television, film, radio and the internet, and
non-linear editing.
- The media studies/journalism concentration
emphasizes writing for print, digital and broadcast media.
Both concentrations emphasize writing, thinking, and the oral
skills necessary for success in the media professions.
Media Studies at the Mount
The communication arts-media studies major offers students close
personal mentoring and opportunities to collaborate with faculty on
media projects for local media and national distribution outlets.
Internships help students refine and expand professional skills.
Senior thesis projects provide important portfolio samples of
professional competence.
Our internship program is the first step in getting real hands
on experience in the field and has been a stepping stone for
successful employment.
Related programs
Media studies majors are encouraged to double major or to at
least minor in other liberal arts areas such as English, political science, arts,
theater arts, music, Hispanic studies, psychology, public relations,
etc. Students can also participate in the 3:2 collaboration program
that offers a bachelor of arts in English from the Mount and a
master's degree in publishing from Pace University.
Program requirements
The communication arts-media studies major is 39 credits
following the successful completion of ENG 1010 and ENG 1020 or
their equivalent. A GPA of 2.0 or better is required in CMA 2020 to
continue in the major. A GPA of 2.0 in the major is required.
Where Mount students have interned
Media journalism students have many internship opportunities in
the Hudson Valley and New York City. Mount students have worked at
such varied companies as Thornwillow Press, Hudson Valley Magazine,
Statewide News Network, WGNY Fox Radio, Hudson Valley Parent
Magazine, Cumulus Radio, Clear Channel Communications, Pamal
Broadcasting, and Times Community Newspapers to name a few.
Career Options
Career opportunities include: positions in web-based creative
companies, newspapers, magazines, the music industry, sports
marketing, marketing, radio, social marketing companies. Positions
where excellent writing is essential demand students like ours.
